5 Diseases you can contract from going to the gym

Going to the gym is great for staying fit and healthy, but it’s important to know that the equipment is used by many people, which means you could catch certain infections or illnesses if you’re not careful.

Here are five diseases you can get from the gym and how to protect yourself:

1. Ringworm

This is a common fungal infection that causes red, itchy, circular rashes on the skin.

  • It spreads easily on sweaty gym floors or from dirty towels.
  • It can appear on the back, chest, thighs, or buttocks.
How to prevent it: Don’t share towels and use antifungal cream if needed after workouts.

2. Folliculitis

This happens when hair follicles get infected, leading to red, itchy pimples or bumps.

  • It can come from using dirty gym gear, shared towels, or swimming in pools without enough chlorine.
  • Wearing tight clothes can also make it worse.
How to prevent it: Shower after your workout and wipe down equipment before using it.

3. Herpes

Although commonly known as a s*xually transmitted disease, herpes can also spread through:

  • Open cuts, mouth blisters, or sharing items like towels, water bottles, razors, or equipment.
How to prevent it: Avoid sharing personal items and be extra cautious if you have a cut or blister.

4. Plantar Warts (HPV)

Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), these warts usually grow on the feet and are painful.

  • They spread by walking barefoot, especially in wet places like showers.
How to prevent it: Always wear flip-flops in the locker room or shower areas.

5. Staph Infection (Staphylococcus Aureus)

This bacteria can cause skin infections like boils, swelling, or even fever.

  • It spreads through skin contact or from contaminated gym equipment.
  • A serious type, MRSA, doesn’t respond to many antibiotics.
How to prevent it: Use hand sanitiser, clean equipment before use, and don’t work out with open wounds.
