7 Questions You Must Ask Your Stylist

Not all hairstylists are the same, and most people know it. That’s why we often try a few before finding one who really understands us and knows how to care for our hair properly.

But you don’t have to go through bad haircuts or awkward appointments to find the right one. You just need to ask the right questions before you let anyone touch your hair.

Here are 7 simple questions to help you figure out if a stylist is the right fit for you:

1. “Are you experienced with Black hair?”
It might seem obvious to ask, but it’s important. Some stylists may be great overall but have little to no experience working with Black hair. Make sure they’ve worked with your hair type before and are confident in handling it.

2. “Will this style suit me?”
A good stylist will look at your hair texture, face shape, skin tone, and even your daily routine before giving a full answer. They should tell you if the style will work for you — and offer ideas to adjust it so it looks even better.

3. “What shampoo and conditioner should I use?”
Stylists usually have favorite brands, but it’s important they recommend what’s best for your hair, not just products they sell. Ask about ingredients — try to avoid harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and petrochemicals.

4. “How do I take care of this style at home?”
It’s one thing to look great walking out of the salon, but you want to keep that look going. Ask for tips on daily care, tools you might need, and quick fixes for when you’re short on time.

5. “What products should I use?”
You’ll want product names, prices, how often to use them, and whether to apply on wet or dry hair. If your stylist knows the style well, they should be able to explain all of this without a problem.

6. “How long will this style last?”
This helps you set realistic expectations. If they say it lasts a week or a year without much detail, that’s a red flag. A good stylist should give you an honest, clear answer based on your hair and lifestyle.

7. “When should I come back for a trim or touch-up?”
Just like the last question, you want a practical and honest answer. A good stylist should be able to tell you quickly when you’ll need your next appointment to keep the style looking fresh.

Asking these questions up front can save you time, money, and stress and help you build a great relationship with a stylist who truly understands your hair.
