A report commissioned by UEFA, the European Club Finance and Investment Landscape, has revealed that Chelsea’s squad at the end of the 2024 financial year was the most expensive ever in terms of transfer fees.
The report provides an in-depth analysis of Europe’s top leagues, based on club submissions and detailed financial reviews.
Its findings consistently highlight the scale of spending by Premier League clubs, both in terms of transfer fees and revenue generation.
According to the study, transfer spending by English clubs surged by 17% in 2023, reaching a record-breaking €2.1 billion.
Among the 20 most expensive squads worldwide, nine belong to Premier League clubs.
Topping the list is Chelsea, who have signed 41 players across six transfer windows since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over in the summer of 2022.
The report confirmed that, by the end of Chelsea’s 2024 financial year, their squad had officially become the most expensive ever assembled, with a total transfer cost of €1.656 billion.
This figure significantly exceeded the previous record held by Manchester United’s 2023 squad, which was valued at €1.422 billion.
