Popular media personality and publisher Dele Momodu has shared strong advice for Nigerians who complain about poverty despite having millions in their bank accounts. He said that anyone with ₦30 million to ₦40 million who still calls themselves poor is “crazy.”
In an interview with Teju Babyface, Momodu spoke passionately about how moving abroad doesn’t always mean a better life. He argued that with ₦30 million, anyone can start a successful business in Nigeria. He also said that insecurity shouldn’t be an excuse, pointing out that Americans didn’t leave New York after the 9/11 attacks.
“If food and security are your concerns, you can even create your own security in Nigeria. With ₦30 million, you can start your own ranch with cows and everything,” he explained.
Momodu also criticized the unrealistic expectations some Nigerians have about life abroad. He warned that the friendly treatment they receive during short visits is very different from the challenges of living permanently in another country.
“The day you take your children to someone else’s house and they realize you’re staying for good, you’ll see the difference. They might tolerate you for a few weeks, but once it becomes a long-term burden, the rejection starts,” he said.
He also talked about the financial difficulties of living overseas, where there’s no way to cut corners or use connections to avoid expenses.
