The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has confirmed that it has received a complaint from Nigerian Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and assured that it will review the matter after hearing both sides.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had approached the IPU regarding her six-month suspension from Nigeria’s Senate and allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. During the Women in Parliament session at the United Nations in New York, she described her suspension as “unlawful” and called on international democratic institutions to intervene.
In response, IPU President Tulia Ackson stated that the organization would follow proper procedures before taking any action. She emphasized that while the IPU has heard Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s concerns, it is important to also listen to the other side to ensure fairness.
Ackson said, “This morning, during the first session, a matter was raised by our colleague from Nigeria, Senator Natasha. We have heard her concerns, but as an institution, the IPU will not only consider her side but also give the other side an opportunity to respond, as is our standard practice. After hearing both sides, we will take the necessary steps. The IPU will handle this matter as we always do when such concerns are brought to our attention.”
The IPU’s commitment to due process highlights its dedication to fairness and transparency in addressing parliamentary disputes.
