Ruben Amorim slammed for ‘garbage decision’ to haul Garnacho off as Man Utd star heads straight down tunnel

Manchester United’s manager faced criticism from fans after a controversial substitution during Wednesday night’s game.

The Red Devils were reduced to ten players against Ipswich when Patrick Dorgu received a straight red card.

The 20-year-old made a reckless tackle on Omari Hutchinson, which VAR confirmed deserved a straight red card.

Amorim quickly adjusted his team to deal with losing his full-back. However, fans were unhappy when he substituted Alejandro Garnacho, an attacking player, for the more defensive Noussair Mazraoui.

One fan angrily tweeted: “Awful decision to take Garnacho off! Terrible, terrible, terrible.”

Without Dorgu, Garnacho was the only player capable of driving the ball forward on the wings and creating chances in wide areas.

Another said: “Garnacho hooked very surprising, he’s an outlet and will run all day.”

While a third wrote: “Why are you taking Garnacho off when you’ve got f***ing Hojlund up front, if the fella fell off a boat he’d miss the water.”

And a fourth added: “I will never fully blame the manager but pulling off Garnacho at 2-1 was a literal f***ing war crime.”

While a fifth complained: “Amorim is a proper coward for taking off Garnacho instead of Hojlund.”

Ruben Amorim acknowledged that Manchester United struggled to make an impact in the first half against Everton.

The substitution decision didn’t seem to sit well with Garnacho, who was seen heading straight down the tunnel to the dressing room. Shortly after, Ipswich equalized.

Jalen Philogene scored his second goal of the game as Ipswich gained momentum heading into the second half.

However, Amorim’s decision eventually proved effective as Harry Maguire scored with a header to put United back in front after halftime.

Garnacho had been linked with a potential move to Napoli during the January transfer window.

The switch didn’t materialise but the Argentine’s future could yet lay away from the North West.

Amorim has admitted any squad rebuild at Old Trafford will have to see them cash in on their prize assets.

The United boss declared earlier this month: “I have to understand these problems [the club has] but that is not new.

“You know the rules of financial fair play, we have a problem and right now my focus is on other things – like playing Tottenham on Sunday.

“But here it is simple. To do something we need to sell players. Right now the window is closed. My focus is on the next game.”
