FG Considers shutting down Abuja Airport Terminal over alleged criminal activities

The Federal Government is considering closing the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, due to reports that the VIP section is being used for illegal activities like money laundering, drug and human trafficking.

The GAT, which serves private jet owners and chartered flights, has allegedly been misused by individuals using the Permit for Non-Commercial Flight (PNCF) to run illegal charter services. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, revealed this while receiving a report from a task force investigating these activities.

Keyamo explained that controlling PNCF holders has been difficult because many of them are highly influential. However, he vowed to address the issue, highlighting his experience as a former EFCC prosecutor.

He described the situation as a serious security threat, stating that the lack of proper monitoring by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has allowed financial crimes, smuggling, and illegal movements across borders.

Keyamo praised the task force for its recommendations and promised to carefully review the report. He warned that if necessary, the government would shut down the GAT to bring order to the private aviation sector.
