Premier League club Fulham has strongly condemned the racist and homophobic abuse directed at Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey following their FA Cup penalty shootout victory over Manchester United on Sunday, March 2.
Bassey, who scored the opening goal at Old Trafford before Bruno Fernandes’ equalizer, later shared the abusive messages he received on social media. Fulham responded swiftly, vowing to take the “strongest possible action” against those responsible.
In an official statement, the club expressed outrage over the incident:
“Fulham is utterly appalled by the racist and homophobic abuse received and shared by Calvin Bassey following our FA Cup match against Manchester United.”
“We strongly condemn this disgraceful behavior, which has no place in football or society. Such actions are completely unacceptable, and we stand firmly by Calvin Bassey, providing him with our full support.”
The club also assured that it would work with the relevant authorities to identify and take decisive action against the perpetrators.
“Fulham Football Club remains committed to fighting all forms of discrimination and fostering an environment of respect and inclusion,” the statement added.
Fulham’s victory over Manchester United secured their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals after a tense 4-3 penalty shootout.
