Chaos erupted at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday when former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa arrived, reportedly trying to reclaim his position.
Obasa entered the Assembly complex around 11:30 AM, accompanied by armed police and civil defense officers, creating tension among lawmakers. With Speaker Mojisola Meranda absent, only two legislators—Ayinde Akinsanya (Mushin I) and Noheem Adams (Mushin II)—were seen with him. Reports suggest that his loyalists forcefully opened the Speaker’s office, while suspected supporters blocked access roads to the Assembly.
Although the House is currently on recess, the situation escalated after security personnel assigned to Speaker Meranda were withdrawn by the Inspector General of Police, leaving her without protection. An aide to Meranda confirmed the withdrawal and called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to step in and prevent further unrest.
Adding to the turmoil, suspended Clerk Olalekan Onafeko attempted to resume office on Wednesday. He arrived with his lawyer and security team but was stopped by Assembly security due to ongoing legal issues. A viral video showed staff mocking him as he left.
The crisis began on January 13, when 32 out of 40 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa and replaced him with Meranda. Despite efforts by President Bola Tinubu, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Governor Sanwo-Olu, and the APC to resolve the matter, no agreement has been reached.
As tensions rise, political stakeholders are urging urgent intervention to restore stability to the Assembly.
