A man from France asked the homeless thieves who stole his credit card and used it to buy a winning lottery ticket to share the €500,000 prize with him. He offered to split the money.
Sometimes, bad things can lead to good outcomes. This is true for a man named Jean David from Toulouse. Earlier this month, his credit card was stolen, but because of that, he now has a chance to win over $250,000.
On February 3rd, Jean David discovered that the backpack containing his wallet had been stolen from his car, but before he could contact the bank to block all his credit cards, someone used one of them to make a €52.50 ($55) purchase at a local convenience store.
When Jean David went to the store, he learned that two men who seemed to be homeless had used his card. They caught the cashier’s attention because they didn’t know the card’s PIN. To his surprise, one of the scratch lottery tickets they bought with his card was worth €500,000 ($525,000).
Jean David’s lawyer, Pierre Debuisson, said his client is willing to share the prize with the thieves because they can’t claim it without him. The French lottery company blocked the prize after Jean David reported his card stolen. If anyone else tried to claim it, they’d likely be arrested. But Jean David is ready to forgive and share half the winnings.
“My client is actually happy his card was stolen under these circumstances and doesn’t want to press charges,” Debuisson said. “This is also a life-changing opportunity for the two men to start over.”
Jean David even asked the thieves to come forward, saying: “Without me, they wouldn’t have won, but without them, I wouldn’t have bought this ticket. I want to offer to share the prize with them.”
In France, scratch ticket winners have 30 days to claim their prize, so time is running out for Jean David and the thieves. “For that much money, I’m ready to make a deal,” he said, adding that he’d use his half to pay off his mortgage.
