Meranda steps down as Lagos Assembly Speaker after 49 Days, returns as deputy Speaker

Mojisola Meranda has stepped down as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly just 49 days after taking office. Her resignation came after a meeting with former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, APC Lagos Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, and the state’s Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro.

In her announcement, Meranda emphasized that her decision was driven by a commitment to preserving the integrity of the legislature. She reaffirmed her dedication to serving her Apapa 1 constituency and reflected on her tenure as a historic milestone, being the first woman to hold the Speaker’s position in the assembly.

“I remain steadfast in the values of honor and dignity instilled in me by my late father, the former Ojora of Lagos,” she stated. “With that in mind, I officially resign as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective March 3, 2025.”

Acknowledging the political factors surrounding her appointment, Meranda described her resignation as a deliberate step to uphold the institution’s credibility.

“As representatives of the people, our duty is to protect democracy. I am proud to have made history as the first female Speaker of this assembly and deeply appreciate the support I received,” she added.

She clarified that her decision was not a retreat but a strategic move to avoid unnecessary conflict and uphold party unity. “The party’s position is paramount, and at this moment, I choose to step aside with grace. Thank you all.”

Shortly after her resignation, Meranda was re-elected as Deputy Speaker of the assembly.
