Pres Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Rivers, Suspends Governor, Deputy, and Assembly

President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to the ongoing political crisis.

In a national address on Tuesday, Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.

The president explained that his decision followed a careful review of the situation. He noted that the governor and his deputy did not formally ask for federal help, as required by Section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Using his constitutional powers, Tinubu activated Section 305 to declare the state of emergency, starting March 18, 2025.

To manage the state during this period, the president appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as Administrator, ensuring that governance continues for the benefit of Rivers State residents.
