Rivers Government express shock over Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration

The Rivers State Government has expressed shock over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in the state. They insisted that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration has been running the state effectively.

In a statement released late Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information, Warisenibo Johnson, said that despite political disagreements, the state government has continued to function well. He mentioned that salaries are being paid, important projects are moving forward, and the state remains peaceful and secure.

President Tinubu’s decision, which has caused widespread debate, includes suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers for six months. He also appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas to oversee the state during this period.

Tinubu explained that his decision was due to the ongoing political crisis, the impact of a recent Supreme Court ruling, and claims that militants loyal to Governor Fubara were sabotaging oil pipelines. This is linked to Fubara’s conflict with former Governor Nyesom Wike, who is now the FCT Minister.

In response, Johnson questioned why Tinubu removed Fubara but did not take action against Wike, who is also said to be involved in the crisis. He argued that Fubara tried to follow the Supreme Court’s decision and other peace agreements but was blocked by lawmakers supporting Wike.

“It is shocking that Mr. President has sacked the Governor while allowing his minister, who is the key figure in this crisis, to remain in office,” Johnson stated.
