Russia stated on Tuesday that the suspension of U.S. military aid to Ukraine following a public dispute between former President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky was the most significant step toward ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
The pause, which took effect immediately on Monday, halts the delivery of hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of weaponry intended for Ukraine, according to The New York Times.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the move as a potential turning point. “If the United States stops military supplies, this would likely be the best contribution to peace,” he said, emphasizing that such a decision could push Kyiv toward negotiations.
“We will observe how the situation unfolds on the ground,” Peskov added, highlighting that the U.S. has been Ukraine’s primary military backer since Russia launched its invasion in February 2023.
