Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on residents to stay calm despite the ongoing political crisis in the state.
In a statement he personally signed, Fubara stressed that his leadership has always followed his constitutional oath and a deep sense of responsibility.
“I address you today with a deep sense of responsibility and calm as we navigate this unfortunate chapter in our political history. Since assuming office, my administration has prioritized the security of lives and property while ensuring the steady progress of our dear state,” he stated.
Despite the political crisis, Fubara emphasized his dedication to maintaining constitutional order and the rule of law, always prioritizing the interests of the people.
“This commitment led us to swiftly implement the peace terms brokered by Mr. President in good faith, including reinstating commissioners who had previously resigned. Additionally, we wasted no time in complying with the Supreme Court’s judgment as soon as we received the certified true copy, all in a bid to restore normalcy to the state,” he explained.
Fubara expressed disappointment that, despite his efforts, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly kept obstructing peace and progress.
“Our primary focus remains the security and well-being of Rivers people. Political disagreements aside, governance has continued unhindered—salaries have been paid, key projects are ongoing, and Rivers State remains safe under our leadership,” he added.
He urged residents to stay peaceful and follow the law, assuring them that his administration would work with relevant institutions to protect democracy and ensure the state’s continued development.
“We are a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” he declared.
On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State and suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and the state lawmakers for six months.
