UK extends Seasonal Worker Visa Scheme by 5 Years to tackle Agricultural Shortage

The UK government has extended the Seasonal Worker Visa Scheme for another five years, allowing farmers and food producers to continue hiring foreign workers on short-term contracts.

Initially set to expire in 2021, the scheme was extended until 2024 at the request of the National Farmers Union (NFU). Now, it has been renewed again to address the ongoing shortage of seasonal workers in agriculture.

Key Features of the Extended Scheme

  • The extension allows workers to stay in the UK for up to six months.
  • In 2025, the UK government will issue 45,000 seasonal worker visas.
  • 43,000 visas are allocated for horticulture roles like fruit and vegetable picking.
  • 2,000 visas are reserved for poultry processing from October 2 to December 31.
  • Workers must be employed by approved scheme operators.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants for the Seasonal Worker Visa must:

  • Secure a job offer through an approved scheme operator.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Show proof of at least £1,270 in savings for self-support upon arrival.
  • Note that dependents are not allowed under this visa.

Application Process

  1. Secure employment through an approved recruitment agency.
  2. Receive a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from the employer.
  3. Apply online, pay the £264 application fee, and schedule a biometrics appointment.
  4. Visa decisions typically take about three weeks.

Concerns and Worker Rights

Labor rights organizations have raised concerns about worker exploitation under the scheme. Since many workers are tied to specific employers, they may struggle to leave unsafe or abusive workplaces.

Kate Roberts, Head of Policy at Focus on Labour Exploitation (FLEX), stated:
“Seasonal Worker Visa holders currently have no realistic way to challenge poor working conditions, wage theft, or sexual harassment in the workplace.”

The UK government has acknowledged these concerns and emphasized that worker welfare is a priority.

Background and Considerations

The Seasonal Worker Visa Scheme was introduced in 2019 after Brexit to address labor shortages in agriculture, particularly due to restrictions on European workers. While the extension continues to create job opportunities, workers should stay informed about their rights and choose reputable employers to ensure fair treatment.
