Benin Republic beat the Super Eagles for the first time in history, on Monday night,June 10, defeating them 2-1.
The defeat means Nigeria has only
three points from four World Cup qualification games.
The Super Eagles came into the game needing a win after drawing to South Africa days ago in Uyo and scored after just 25 minutes with Club Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika giving the Super Eagles the advantage when he shot just inside the box.
But Cheetahs of Benin coached by former Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr, equalized in the 37th minute from Jodei Dossou after a defensive error from the Super Eagles.
Just before the halftime, Steve Mounie scored again for Benin.
Im the second half, despite pressure from Nigeria, the Cheetahs defended very well to record one of the biggest wins in football.
The result leaves Nigeria 5th in the Group C qualification slot for the 2026 World Cup.
