For the second time in a week, a gas cylinder explosion has occurred in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, affecting a building with 104 rooms.
The explosion happened on Friday around 8:05 PM on Ejiba Road, near Ejiba Bridge in Ilorin, after a gas cylinder was left unattended.
Earlier in the week, another gas explosion took place on Wednesday at No. 90, Koro Compound, Oke-Apomu Quarters in Ilorin, burning down a 20-room building.
Speaking about Friday’s incident, Hassan Adekunle, the spokesperson for the state fire service, said firefighters responded quickly and found several rooms in the 104-room building on fire.
“The firefighters worked hard to control the fire. Out of the 104 rooms, they saved 89, with only 15 damaged by the flames,” he said.
Hassan added that initial investigations showed the fire was caused by a gas cooker that was left unattended.
Prince Falade John, the Director of the state fire service, urged the public to always prioritize safety. He noted that this was the second fire incident in a week caused by careless handling of gas cookers.
He strongly warned people to avoid using gas cookers without paying close attention.
