Man arrested for setting up his own police station and running it for 6 months

A Kenyan man, Collins Letting, has been arrested for creating and running an illegal police station in Chebarus, Uasin Gishu County, for six months. The fake station, painted in official police colors, included detention cells and an office. It was used to monitor the area, specifically targeting people carrying unlicensed timber from Cengalo Forest. Shockingly, even the local chief was unaware the station was fake.

Police uncovered the facility on March 8 and reported the incident at Kamuyu Police Post. “We were shocked to find a fully operational facility painted in police colors, even though no permission had been given to set up such a station in this area,” part of the police report stated.

Under Kenya’s National Police Service Act 2014, only the Inspector-General of Police has the authority to establish police stations and patrol bases. Letting now faces legal consequences for his actions.
