Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has opened up about how long he wishes to live, explaining that he has turned down prayers for him to live beyond 100 years.
During a recent sermon, the respected pastor shared how some of his followers prayed for him to reach various ages. He recalled that when they prayed for him to live to 80, he happily said “Amen.” When they prayed for him to reach 90, he agreed again. But when the numbers went higher, he began to hesitate.
Pastor Adeboye explained that when someone prayed for him to live to 100, he stayed silent. When another person enthusiastically prayed for him to live to 120, he firmly rejected it, jokingly asking what he had done wrong to deserve staying on earth for another 50 years. He added that the world is full of challenges, making such a long life unappealing.
He also shared a humorous moment when a woman, carried away by excitement, prayed for him to live to 140. To this, he responded with a clear “No, that’s not for me.”
“When I turned 70, some of my members started praying for me. They said, ‘Daddy, you will live to be 80,’ and I said Amen. Then they said, ‘You will live to be 90,’ and I said Amen again. But when they said, ‘You will live to be 100,’ I didn’t respond. Then someone got carried away and said, ‘You will live to be 120,’ and I said, ‘No way! What have I done wrong that God would keep me here for another 50 years? In this world? Where you have electricity today and none tomorrow?’
“But there was one woman who got really excited and said, ‘You will live to be 140,’ and I said, ‘That’s not for me.'”
Pastor Adeboye’s lighthearted yet thoughtful remarks highlight his perspective on life and his acceptance of God’s timing.
