Women’s Group Apologizes to Senate Over Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Allegations

The Nigerian Women Crusade for Good Governance (NWCGG), a coalition of 100 women’s groups, has publicly apologized to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Senate over allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

During a press conference held in Abuja on March 11, 2025, Dr. Cecilia Ikechukwu, the spokesperson for NWCGG, criticized Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions, describing them as “disruptive, crude, and distasteful.” She expressed concern that the senator’s behavior had embarrassed Nigerian women and damaged the reputation of female politicians working hard to gain public trust.

The group accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of having a pattern of blackmailing powerful men and using false accusations to gain political attention. They praised Senate President Akpabio for his efforts to support women’s participation in governance and reiterated their dedication to advancing female leadership in Nigeria.

NWCGG suggested that Akpoti-Uduaghan use her six-month suspension from the Senate as an opportunity for self-reflection, therapy, and learning the rules and decorum of the Senate. They emphasized that her actions had reinforced negative stereotypes about women in leadership but stressed that her behavior should not overshadow the progress made by other Nigerian women in politics.

“Women in governance must inspire, not embarrass,” the group declared. They encouraged Nigerians to focus on the accomplishments of female leaders who have served with integrity and distinction. NWCGG also called on citizens to promote good governance and hold leaders accountable, highlighting the importance of character, maturity, and responsible leadership in building a nation founded on integrity and respect.
